Q&A with Melissa Wood

What is the best part about motherhood?
I go to bed and wake up with a permanent smile on my face. Observing the world through his innocent little eyes has given me more joy in life than anything I've ever experienced.
What is the most challenging part of motherhood?
The hardest part for me is not being able to control when he takes his naps. Although I put him down at the same time every day, he's changing day to day with his nap schedule so not being able to know when he's going to fall asleep is challenging for me. I'm working on letting that go.
How do you balance work and family?
I balance it all by prioritizing what's important to me. I meditate every morning that I wake up before him or when he goes down for his nap because it makes me better all around. I'm more patient, less reactive and a much better listener when I meditate. It's a must for me. Benjamin is my number one priority after taking care of myself. I feel very confident saying that because when I do what I need to take care of me, I'm a much better mother and wife and person in return. I eat very healthy to feel my best. When you're running after a 15month old starting at 7 am, you need to fuel your body with the best nutrients to keep up with that. My workouts are not what they used to be, but I always make time at least 3-4 days a week for movement even if it's for 20 min. I've created my own flow of yoga and Pilates sequences that keeps me in tip top shape. I treat my body exactly the way I hope for Benjamin to treat his body one day. Like a temple.
What do you do for “me time?”
I read a lot of great books once he goes down to bed. I'm reading three books at once right now because I like to change it up depending on my mood. (The Happy Vegan, The Untethered Soul, and A Return to Love (for the 4th time) I love to have breakfast or dinner with my husband or invite some girlfriends over to cook for them. I love to take care of people I love.
What is one piece of advice you would pass on to other moms?
My best piece of advice is you have all the answers inside you. If you feel like something is off, it probably is. I try my best not to go around opinion shopping for things I'm not 100% sure of. Once you sit with it for a moment, you'll find the answer to anything.
