Q&A with Jen Anderson (Little Wife Powerhouse)

Oh, how am I supposed to answer that?! There are too many good parts about being a mom! One of my favorite things my kids ever say to me in their adorable little voices is that I'm their best friend. If they ever want anything from me, that's all they have to say! I love watching (especially our oldest) have something click finally. You can see the pride on his face and he feels like a total rock star! Cuddles are good too, obviously!
What is the most challenging part of motherhood?
Figuring out a way to discipline without butting heads constantly has been a challenge for me. I'm very strong-willed, so we both dig our heels in, and it becomes a huge power struggle where no matter how it ends. I feel like we've both lost.
How do you balance work and family?
It seems like working moms always get this question and I feel like the answer is typically the same. There's no such thing as balance! Every day is different and a new dance. As a working-from-home mom, I always try to put my kids needs at the forefront but there are days I just have to get work done, and the iPad is my best friend. There are days I have to get housework done, and then there are days where I'm just focused on my kids all day. I always make a to-do list, prioritize each thing and go from there.
What is a typical day like for you?
The things that stay constant are school drop offs/pick ups (4 per day!) and an after school activity for one of my kids (swim lessons, gymnastics, etc.). Those are the things I can 100% count on I have to do every day. Besides that, I try to get my youngest down for a nap while my middle is at preschool. I do the naptime hustle (aka working my booty off as fast + quietly as possible). We have lunch and clean up a little and try to get a handle on dinner. We have activities almost every evening, but it's a HUGE priority to my family to have dinner together every night so prepping some for dinner in the afternoon is totally necessary. If I don't, you can usually find cereal on our dinner table!
What do you do for “me time?”
I'm very good at prioritizing "me time" and I'm not ashamed of it! I set aside time once a month to get a massage, take long baths when I'm stressed and watch whatever dating show is currently on every Monday night. I also truly believe that your day goes more smoothly if you take some "me time" each morning to get ready. I try to get up a little earlier than my kids to make sure that gets done. For me, that doesn't always mean makeup but at least get out of PJs and brush my hair -- that's the minimum! I set the bar high, guys!
What is one piece of advice you would pass on to other moms?
My best advice to other moms is always to remember to be kind to yourself. We're all doing the best we can and some days we will fall short of our expectations and some days we will far exceed them. Don't be too hard on yourself on the days you fall short. Tomorrow is another day, and you are a great mom!
